Stained Glass “Call to Artists”

New Light Congregation Releases “Call to Artists” for Stain Glass Installation
in New Chapel Honoring Pittsburgh Shooting Victims

PITTSBURGH, June 28, 2020 — New Light Congregation has released a “Call to Artists” for the design, fabrication and installation of a stained glass door and window to be installed in the New Light Memorial Chapel, located at its cemetery in Shaler Township, honoring the three New Light congregants who were killed in the Pittsburgh Synagogues Shooting on October 27, 2018. The Chapel will also house historical memorabilia of the congregation.

New Light Congregation is seeking artists to create designs that can be fabricated in stained glass reflecting any one of the themes found in the Torah portion that would have been read during the service of October 27, 2018 – Genesis 21:1 – 22:24 (“Vayera”). These chapters cover the birth of Isaac; the banishment of Hagar and Ishmael; and the binding of Isaac. The Congregation hopes to announce the selected design in time for the third commemoration, this fall with installation occurring in the spring. A prize of $2,500 is being offered for the winning design.

“Monuments and memorials are ultimately for the living. It is important,” said Stephen Cohen, Co-President of the Congregation, “that we create a sacred space to remember and honor those we lost that allows the living to reflect on the lives of the deceased and the reason for their demise.” The New Light Memorial Chapel is intended to be such a place.

Art is to be submitted by September 3rd. Donations to support the building of the Chapel and the creation of the stained glass are appreciated.
